“Heritage branding” and vicarious nostalgia
Marketing studies that pertain to origin stories on product packages are mostly concerned with “heritage” or “nostalgia branding,” as well as consumer perceptions of authenticity and the corresponding effect on sales.
Origin stories in folklore studies
Stories that account for the world's creation or its origins. These tales of cosmogony interest the folklorist because they suggest meanings underlying the human condition. From the Encyclopedia of American Folklore
Collecting and categorizing
Collecting is not neutral. Like stories, collections are characterized as much by what is absent as by what is present. Cultures makes determinations about what is valuable and worth preserving; individuals decide what to group together and what to put aside; time and place make objects and ideas more or less available. The stories collected here share two qualities by design: they appear in print on consumer product packages, and they explicitly account for the origin of the product or company they are associated with.
About Marketplace origin stories

The idea for this site came to us after encountering a story on a bottle of skin cleanser about how it was invented as a treatment for radioactive exposure during the Cold War. We started looking more closely at product packages and we saw stories of origin everywhere. Where do these stories come from?, we asked. Where are they going? We made this website to collect, compare and interpret these stories from the marketplace. We welcome your participation and feedback.
